Plank

Core · Beginner · Works: Abs, glutes, shoulders

How to do it

  1. Place your forearms on the floor with elbows under your shoulders.
  2. Extend your legs behind you with toes on the floor.
  3. Squeeze your glutes, brace your abs and keep a straight line from head to heels.
  4. Hold while breathing steadily.

Common mistakes

  • Sagging hips. Squeeze your glutes to lift them level.
  • Hips too high. Lower them until your body is straight.
  • Holding your breath. Breathe slowly and keep your jaw relaxed.

Make it easier or harder

Easier: Drop to your knees or place your hands on a bench for an incline plank.

Harder: Lift one foot at a time or add slow shoulder taps.

Coaching tip

A shorter hold with perfect form beats a long, sagging one. Stop when your form breaks.

Learn each move with light weight first. Stop if you feel sharp pain, dizziness or chest discomfort, and talk to a doctor or qualified trainer if you are unsure.
